Greetings and blessings,

I duly received your letter of the 17th[1] of Sivan, and I would like to reiterate to you the warm wishes which I expressed to you when you were here. May you conceive much nachas* from your grandson who is celebrating his bar mitzvah*[2], and from your other children and grandchildren. It is needless to specify to someone like yourself that the true nachas is that which is bound up with Torah and mitzvos*.

In my opinion, you should exercise more clearly your influence over your children, in order to strengthen them in Torah and mitzvos. It is well understood that "the words of the Wise are heard in calmness," and only in this manner, as the Sages themselves emphasize, in the Shnei Luchos HaBris*, Gate of Letters, end of the letter Kuf, and in the Shaar HaPesukim of the Arizal*, who comments on this verse. I rely on your understanding to find the ways and means of increasing the influence which you exercise over them.

Nevertheless, it is fitting to emphasize that many parents do not measure at its true value the influence which they exercise over their children. They think that their efforts are in vain. Consequently, they do not make use of their influence as they ought. These are mistaken, the ascendancy of parents over children always being beyond what they imagine. An effort in this direction will yield a considerable result. Even if it does not exert its full effect, it will do so at least to a large extent.

You will find enclosed the letter which I am addressing to the bar mitzvah boy. He did not specify to me in which language I was to write to him, but you informed me of your intention to read it before the entire assembly of guests[3]. I therefore drafted it in Yiddish.

שלום וברכה!

קבלתי מכתבו מיום ה' טו"ב סיון, ואכפול עוה"פ איחולי הלבביים שאחלתי לו בהיותו כאן, שישבע רוב נחת מנכדו הבר-מצוה וכן משאר ילידיו וצאצאיו שיחיו.

ולמותר להדגיש לדכוותי' כי נחת אמתי הוא נחת הקשור עם תורה ומצות.

לפי דעתי הי' צריך להשתמש יותר בהשפעתו על בניו שי' לחזקם בתורה ומצוות.

ומובן מאליו כי בכגון דא הכלל הוא, על פי מרז"ל (של"ה ש' האותיות סוף אות ק. ש' הפסוקים להאריז"ל ע"פ זה) דברי חכמים בנחת - אז - נשמעים, ואל בינתו אשען בנוגע להדרכים והאופנים כיצד להגדיל השפעתו עליהם.

ברם את זה יש להדגיש, כי יש הרבה הורים שאינם מעריכים כדבעי השפעתם על בניהם וחושבים כי לשוא עמלם, במילא מאבדים הרבה מהשפעתם שהיו יכולים להשפיע על בניהם, אבל טעות היא בידם, כי יכולים הורים להשפיע על בניהם הרבה יותר מאשר משערים, וכאשר ישתדלו בזה בודאי יפעלו הרבה ואם לא בכל מאה אחוזים, אבל בטח במדה גדולה.
