B'ezras Hashem,

22 Sivan 5711,

Brooklyn,

Greetings and blessings[1],

I received your telegram and your letter informing me that you have arrived safely. I was very pleased to learn that the journey went well, that, upon arriving there, you were able to verify that all was well. But I learned with pain that you are feeling discouraged. This feeling is altogether out of place.

It is said that "a broken spirit is a sacrifice to Hashem," but it is needless to specify that this is by no means discouragement, and still less despair, which is harmful to health, chas v'shalom*, acts upon the nervous system, makes one perceive everything in a manner more severe and grave than what it really is.

My father-in-law, the Rebbe, related that his father, the Rebbe Rashab*, said to him on one occasion: "Observe the value of the Jewish body, for which so much Torah and so many mitzvos have been poured forth." Thus, Hashem has given so precious a body. One must therefore strive, in a sincere manner, that this body be in good health, in order to put into practice what Hashem expects of us.

The Rambam[2], Hilchos Deos*, chapter 4, says: "Having an upright body in good health is part of the service of Hashem." And a letter of the Maggid of Mezritch*, printed in Hatamim, addressed to his son, the Malach[3], says: "a small hole in the body makes a gaping hole in the soul."

My purpose is not to discourse. I would, however, like to convince you to adopt this attitude and, through you, also persuade your husband, the Rav. Certainly, the Zohar* says that "the strength of the soul is the weakness of the body." This means that one must weaken the demands of the body and not its state of health, chas v'shalom. One can verify this concretely. A body in good health enables one to be much more active in all areas and, in particular, in what concerns the love of Hashem, the love of Torah, and the love of one's fellow.

I hope that you will give me good news of your state of health and of that of your husband, the Rav and chassid. May Hashem grant that each one of us announce only good news to the others, materially and spiritually.

With my brochah for good health and for conceiving Yiddishe and chassidishe nachas* from all your descendants and the members of your family,

M. Schneerson,
