To the distinguished chassid* who has yiras Shamayim*, Rav Menachem Mendel[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I had news of you with pleasure, through the great Rav and distinguished chassid* who has yiras Shamayim* and dedicates himself faithfully to communal needs, Rav Shlomo Zalman Hecht[2]. I also received your contribution to tzedakah*, which you charge me to distribute as I see fit.

I have apportioned this sum as follows: three units for the Kollel* Chabad of Yerushalayim*, three units for the Yeshiva* Toras Emes of Yerushalayim*, and three units for the Yeshiva* of immigrants from Russia, in Lod. I have transmitted the rest to the office of the Merkaz[3], for the actions led in North Africa, which Rav Hecht has surely evoked before you. I will speak briefly to you about it.

Two weeks before leaving this world, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, expressed the wish to introduce a good educational network into North Africa, where very many Jews live, who are observant and wish for a religious education for their children, but their immense poverty prevents most of them from giving it to them.

In conformity with the desire of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, and shortly after his passing, a particular emissary was delegated to North Africa, in order to ascertain the situation on the spot.

It has now been a year since a yeshiva*, an elementary yeshiva*, Talmud Torah* schools, and a cheder* were created, for the little boys and the little girls. Thank Hashem, the success is considerable. The children are satisfied, pursue their studies, and do so with success.

The only obstacle preventing the broadening of this educational work as it should be is the lack of means. This situation is all the more painful to the heart since the cost of living is, there, very inexpensive. One dollar suffices to ensure a good education for a child for a month. Each dollar transmitted to the Merkaz office therefore permits one to form one more Jewish child, to strengthen his bond to Torah and mitzvos*, so that he may remain a conscious Jew throughout his existence.

I would like to know whether you have a fixed time to study Torah and on which books your study bears. You doubtless observe, without making it a vow, the daily practice instituted by my father-in-law, the Rebbe, which consists of reading Tehillim* after davening[4].

I conclude by addressing my blessing to you that you may have long days and good years, that you may rise in Torah, mitzvos*, and in particular in tzedakah*, and that you may announce good news.

בטח שומר השיעורים של לימוד חומש -פרשה מפרשת השבוע -כל

יום ,וכן שיעור תהלים יו מי) כפי שהתהלים נחלק לימי החודש( וגם את

שיעור התניא כפי שחמי ,כ״ק אדמו״ר ,חילק אותו לימי השנה.
