Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1054 — Chassidus

Volume 4 · Letter 290 · To: grand Rav

By the grace of Hashem,
17 Sivan 5711,
Brooklyn,

To the great Rav, distinguished chassid* who has yiras Shamayim*, Rav M. I. I.[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I duly received your letter, in which you formulate a remark on what the kuntres* edited on the occasion of Shavuos 5711[2] says, on page 278: "The Rebbe constitutes the Kohen Gadol*." In my note[3], I emphasized that the meaning of this affirmation is not totally clear. You propose to interpret it according to what the Avodas Yisroel, work of the Maggid of Kozhnitz, says regarding Yom Kippur. He explains, indeed, that the tzaddikim*, by their holiness, bring elevation to the Kohen Gadol* and to the chazzan* of the community.

I do not think that this explanation is the right one, for we no longer have a Kohen Gadol*. And how could it be the chazzan*, who is not even mentioned here. In my opinion, here is how this text must be understood. The Rebbe Rashab* explained the application to avodas Hashem* of each of these acts[4], which every Jew must accomplish in his soul.

Then, evoking the Kohen Gadol*, he specified that the possibility of equaling him in the moral dimension is brought by the Rebbe. It is after having received the strength that he grants that one can, spiritually, serve Hashem like a Kohen Gadol*.

If such is indeed the meaning of this text, there are here two new ideas, opposed to one another:

A) Each one is bound to equal the Kohen Gadol*, obviously in a spiritual manner. Thus, chapter 29 of Iggeres HaKodesh* says that the mitzvos* depending on the king are not entrusted to all. It says nothing of the kind for the Kohen Gadol*. You will also consult the Shaar HaGilgulim, eleventh and sixteenth introductions, the Shnei Luchos HaBris, at the beginning of the part on the Written Law, and the introduction of the Toldos Yaakov Yosef.

B) It is impossible to seek to attain such a level if one is not helped to reach it.

But one can still question all this.

With my blessing for a prompt recovery,
