Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1053 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 4 · Letter 289
By the grace of Hashem,
17 Sivan 5711,
Brooklyn,
Greetings and blessings,
I duly received the book Kocho of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, which you sent me. I thank you for it, and our Sages say, in tractate Bava Kama 92b, that "the wine belongs to its owner, but one thanks the one who serves it."
Nevertheless, one thanks the one who serves it only if he himself possesses free will[1], as the Sefer HaMitzvos of the Tzemach Tzedek* explains, in chapter 3 of the mitzvah* of circumcision. This is the case only if the owner is Jewish, but not if he is an angel or a non-Jew. You will consult the Likkutei Torah*, on Parshas Emor, in the commentary on the maamar* Veheinif, chapter 3. But one can still question this.
You will kindly thank for me the author of this book, who offered it to me. As far as possible, it would be good if he would send his other books to our library, possibly in exchange for publications of the Kehot editions. If you could obtain it, I would be very grateful.
You will congratulate the author on having written a book belonging to the hidden part of the Torah in general, and in particular linked to the Zohar*, thanks to which the children of Israel will leave the exile with mercy, very soon and in our days.
I must, however, express my surprise. Indeed, various passages of this book show that the author has knowledge of the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov* and of his disciples. Despite this, I have not yet seen, for the moment, that he cites the works of Chabad, while these treat of the concepts that he develops in his book.
There was a time when, in certain circles, one adopted a reserved attitude toward the teaching of Chabad, as it is said: "do not seek that which is beyond you." One considered that it suffices to mark one's faith in Hashem throughout the day, as say, in particular, the books of the Rebbe of Zhiditchov.
Likewise, several generations before that, many great ones of Israel were frightened by the dissemination of general Chassidus*, that is, of the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov*. And, several generations before that again, the spreading of the Zohar* also caused fear.
Then, several decades after the diffusion of the Zohar*, and afterwards several decades after the revelation of the Baal Shem Tov* and his teaching, and subsequently with the illumination, which still continues at the present time, of the six luminaries who were the leaders of Chabad, from the Alter Rebbe* to my father-in-law, the Rebbe, it was concretely established that one could no longer do without this teaching.
Let one meditate on the consequences of the study of the Zohar*, then of the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov*, on the effort, in particular developed in our era, to study Chabad Chassidus*. There is no longer the shadow of a doubt that the Zohar* is the tree of life, that the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov* constitutes the wellsprings of which Mashiach* spoke to him[3], that at the present time, Chabad Chassidus* is the means of understanding the Zohar*. It is in this manner that one can spread the wellsprings to the outside, and thus, bring about the coming of King Mashiach*.
We have all had the merit, even if one can question the value of our generation, to witness an ample revelation of the hidden concepts of the Zohar* and of Chassidus*, henceforth accessible to human reason. In any event, one can know that these concepts exist, even if one does not perceive them deeply.
In this way, the intellect unites with the knowledge of Hashem, Who fills the worlds and surrounds them, in relation to Whom all is insignificant. One can thus surpass faith and what it permits. He who does not draw profit from all this, although by an effect of hashgachah pratis* he has knowledge of the existence of Chabad Chassidus*, arouses the greatest astonishment.
Moreover, he who has the possibility of learning this part of the Torah and does not do so is not considered as having conducted his study as he should have. You will consult the laws of the study of the Torah, of the Alter Rebbe*, chapter 1, end of paragraph 4, on this subject. This text says: "The Sages of Truth[4] say... they say further... the perfection of the soul consists, for it, in knowing all that it can study of the Torah. It cannot rise and perfect itself, in its source, without this knowledge."
It is unnecessary to say more, so logical and evident is this.
I will now give you a non-exhaustive list of references in Chassidus* speaking of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai: Iggeres HaKodesh*, chapters 19 and 26; Torah Or, page 23c; Likkutei Torah* Vayikra, page 18a, citing a note of the Tzemach Tzedek* according to which the Baal Shem Tov* had a considerable elevation; page 28a; Bamidbar, pages 84c, 87d; Devarim, pages 12b, 43a, which speaks of an elevation higher than that of King David, which is surprising; Shir HaShirim page 19c; Siddur of the Alter Rebbe*, gate of Lag BaOmer*, maamar* Vehecherim 5631, from page 52, and other references still.
The maamar* Ve'eileh Shemos 5617, of Rabbi Hillel of Paritch, currently in press[5], says: "According to the Alter Rebbe*, for the highest souls, like that of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, the Beis HaMikdash* was never destroyed."
I will conclude with an explanation that one can perhaps advance regarding the commentary of our Sages, which the introduction to the book Kocho of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai relates. It appears in the Yerushalmi Sanhedrin, chapter 1, paragraph 2. When Rabbi Akiva gave smichah* to Rabbi Meir and to Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, he asked that Rabbi Meir take his place first. Rabbi Shimon was affected by this, and Rabbi Akiva then said to him: "It suffices for you that I myself and your Creator know your strength."
On this subject, one can pose several questions. Here are some of them. Concerning the answer: if Rabbi Akiva knew the strength of Rabbi Shimon, why did he not have him take his place first? And if Rabbi Shimon did not have the strength for it, why did Rabbi Akiva not tell him so? And what does it matter that "I myself and your Creator know your strength"? The Pnei Moshe explains that Rabbi Meir was older than Rabbi Shimon. But this explanation does not appear at all here.
On the form of the answer: why say "your Creator" and not "the Holy One, blessed be He" or "the Almighty," according to common expressions? All the more so since the Sages acquire the Torah not through natural creation, but indeed thanks to the forty-eight qualities that one must possess. And why say "your strength" and not "your wisdom," since it is a matter of smichah* of the Sages? And, regarding the answer, why say "I and your Creator" and not the inverse?
The explanation is briefly the following, time not permitting me to make the development that would be necessary. The whole Torah is found in the higher world of Atzilus*, according to the Torah Or Chayei Sarah, at the end of the maamar* taking up the words of the Rebbe. Then the Talmud, the deep reasons of the halachah*, appears in that of Beriah*, and the Mishnah*, the decided halachah*, occulting the reasons, in Yetzirah*. The Tanya* explains all this in chapter 52. Kabbalah, on the other hand, is only in Atzilus*, as says the Torah Or, at the same reference, the note in chapter 40 of the Tanya*, the Kuntres Acharon, in the paragraph beginning "in order to understand what the Pri Etz Chaim says."
Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai was a master of the secrets of the Torah, and through his intermediary, the possibility of perceiving them was also granted to the other Sages, who could thus bring out the hidden teaching of the Torah within its revealed part, as says the maamar* Vehecherim, previously cited.
When the Sages gather to discuss the Torah, they do not concern themselves with knowing who will take his place first and who will be second. If, on the other hand, it is a matter of deciding the halachah*, of ruling on a financial problem, one questions first the greatest, who is then seated first. To pronounce a death sentence, on the other hand, one begins with the smallest, according to chapter 4 of tractate Sanhedrin.
What has just been said permits one to understand this passage of the Yerushalmi. Rabbi Akiva had Rabbi Meir and Rabbi Shimon take their places in this order. It was, in this case, a matter of deciding the halachah*. Rabbi Meir therefore took his place first because "he illuminated the eyes of the Sages with the halachah*," according to tractate Eruvin 13b. Rabbi Shimon was affected by this, knowing that he knew perfectly how to discuss the Torah, as says tractate Shabbos 33b, and that he was, moreover, a master of the secrets of the Torah, which he furthermore transmitted to the other Sages.
To be sure, Rabbi Shimon acquired some of his qualities long after his smichah* by Rabbi Akiva. But he already possessed some of them, and especially knew his capacities in the matter, what he could obtain since his aptitudes had revealed themselves from the start.
Rabbi Akiva answered him that "I," that is, the Attribute of Malchus* of the world of Atzilus*, according to the Zohar*, vol. 1, page 6b, and tractate Sukkah 53a, and "your Creator," the Talmud, which is in Beriah* and reveals in itself the Attribute of Malchus* of Atzilus*, "know your strength," although it has not yet revealed itself in the decided halachah*, which is situated in Yetzirah*. The meaning of strength is explained in the Likkutei Torah* on three Parshiyos, page 56c.
There are indeed extraordinary qualities here. Consequently, "it suffices for you," and when the halachah* was decided, in Yetzirah*, Rabbi Meir took his place first.
What has just been said permits one to answer the questions previously posed.
With my blessing for all material and spiritual good,
