Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1049 — Torah Study

Volume 4 · Letter 285 · To: chapitre 1 : Le Or Bahir cite le Tsyouni

By the grace of Hashem,
15 Sivan 5711,
Brooklyn,

To the Rav, learned and distinguished chassid* who has yiras Shamayim*, of many areas of knowledge, scholar who gives form to the Torah, Rav R.[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I received your letter in its time, and I have just received your book, the Sefer HaBahir, with your notes and commentaries. I thank you very much for it.

You ask me my opinion on it. I think that this is an important work, clarifying and illuminating the Zohar*, the Tikunei Zohar, the Sefer HaBahir, and the Zohar Chadash. One finds in it much dexterity and effort.

Our Sages teach, in tractate Eruvin 21b, that one teaches wisdom to the people by stating to them the traditional signs of the Torah, and the verse thus introduces the fact that this wisdom permits one to deepen understanding and to formulate many parables. The beginning of the Midrash* Shir HaShirim Rabbah gives many illustrations of this principle.

How much more so for the Zohar*, for which the work to be accomplished remains important, and I have been able to ascertain concretely the interest your remarks present when I myself was studying these works. May you receive the blessing of the many people who will study the Zohar* thanks to your commentaries.

Nevertheless, it is unfortunate that your explanations are so concise, especially where they should have been developed. And I am surprised, and even astonished, that in several places, which a child himself could point out, you do not cite the commentaries of Chabad Chassidus*, directly linked to the subject you are evoking.

Moreover, Chabad Chassidus* formulates a specific interpretation of Kabbalah and of the words of our Sages found in the Zohar*. At the present time, this omission is particularly surprising, while the works of Chassidus* are more and more widespread, and the opposition that had previously emerged has disappeared.

As you asked me, I sent you, by separate dispatch, the Haggadah* of Pesach*[2]. Likewise, your name has been added to the list of recipients of the kuntreisim*[3].

I address my blessing to you that you may develop the garment and the body of the Torah[4], as well as its soul and the soul of its soul[5], according to the expression of the Zohar*, on page 154a.

N.B.: As is my habit, to mark my interest, I immediately leafed through your book, and this rapid examination leads me to the following remarks:

In chapter 1: The Or Bahir cites the Tziyuni, who says: "One can establish clearly that the light was created." The same formulation appears in the Lemberg edition, edited in 1882, which I have. One should verify what is the case in earlier editions, for, in my opinion, there is no doubt that one should say: "the darkness was created."

To determine whether there was, properly speaking, a creation of the darkness, you will consult an explanatory note[6] appearing at the beginning of the kuntres* edited for 12 Tammuz 5708[7].

In chapter 200: You will consult the explanations of our Sages stated in the Torah Shleimah, on Bereishis, in chapter 3.

The Sefer HaBahir is cited by the Torah Or, appearing in the Kehot edition as it was published in Vilna, on pages 18c, 114c twice, and in the Likkutei Torah*, on Parshas Beshalach 2a, Vayikra 35b, Bamidbar 51a, 63c, 64a, 94a. You will consult all these references.
