To the Confederation of Workers of Agudas Yisroel, in the Holy Land,

Greetings and blessings,

I had hoped that the elections in the Holy Land would not take place now or, at least, that they would be postponed[1]. For various reasons, it is not good that they should be held at the present time, as long as unity does not reign in the camp of Orthodox Yiddishkeit*, so that it can present a united front.

I was dismayed to learn that the religious front has been broken.

It is, of course, unnecessary to specify that in such a case, each party must renounce its political interests, since they go against the public good. And what concerns Orthodox Yiddishkeit* as a whole has priority over any material profit, even when it is certain — and how much more so when it is illusory and hypothetical, all the more so since it may even turn out to be a loss.

For all these reasons, and considering the letter that you wrote to me on 12 Adar Sheni[2], I consider it unnecessary to say more. You will doubtless do everything in your power so that this religious front be constituted, which is indispensable not only for the good of all, but also for each party in particular.

I thank you in advance for the good news that you will announce to me in this matter.

We have discussed the contents of your telegram and your letter. We are happy to inform you that we have found in your words a support and an encouragement for our own position. Those who are aware of the dissensions emerging among men in this country, of the barriers that separate them, can only be frightened by the eventuality of elections. Likewise, we have not had and we never had the intention or the will to present ourselves at these elections on an independent list, although we were full of hesitations before the grave inadequacies that a religious front would present. These hesitations, which will not be detailed here, have strengthened during the two and a half years of existence of this front and of its participation in the government. Nevertheless, since this religious front exists, it is inconceivable to dismantle it. The rejection of such an eventuality should suffice for all the religious parties to present themselves on a single list.

At the first elections, we clearly supported this position, but the constitution of a single list failed because of the obstinacy of certain persons, who place their dubious personal interests above public needs. We were therefore constrained to act in contradiction with our sentiment. At the present moment, once again, it is entirely conceivable to constitute a single list, provided that those responsible for the first failure do not repeat themselves.

May the Almighty grant us peace, for ourselves, for all Israel, and for Yerushalayim.

קוה קויתי אשר הבחירות באה"ק ת"ו לא תתקיימנה כעת או לכל הפחות יודחו למשך זמן, כי מכמה טעמים אין הזמן גרמא לכך, ועל כל פנים אשר תהי' אחדות בתוך היהדות החרדית, כדי להקים חזית מאוחדת לבחירות.

ומה נבהלתי בקבלתי הידיעות מהפרת החזית הדתית.

בודאי למותר להאריך לפניהם אשר [בשאלה] כמו שאלה הנ"ל, הרי על כל מפלגה לוותר על רווחים מפלגתיים המנגדים לטובת הכלל, ואשר לענינים הנוגעים ליהדות החרדית בכללותה, דין קדימה על כל ריוח גשמי אפילו אם ריוח זה בטוח הוא, ואין צריך לומר אם הריוח מדומה ומוטל בספק, ובפרט אשר יכול הוא להיות גם קרוב להפסד.

מטעמים אלו, ונשען על מכתבם אלי מי"ב לחדש אדר שני, אחשוב אשר האריכות בכהנ"ל למותר, ובטח יתאמצו בכל יכולתם, שהחזית הדתית תתקיים, דבר אשר באמת למוכרח הוא לא רק לטובת הכלל, אלא גם לכל אחת מהמפלגות.

מכתבם אלי מי"ב לחדש אדר שני : כ"ק הגה"צ מוהרמ"ם שניאורסון שליט"א האדמו"ר מליבוביץ נ. יורק המברק והמכתב של כ"ק היו נושא אצלנו לדיון, והננו שמחים להודיע לכ"ק כי מצאנו בדבריו חזוק ועדוד רב לעמדתנו. כל היודעים ומכירים את התהומות שבין אדם לחברו בארץ הזו - והמחיצות המבדילים, אינו יכול שלא להיבהל מפני זוועת הבחירות. וכן אין אצלנו ולא היה לעולם שום כונה או רצון להופיע בבחירות עם רשימה נפרדת, למרות שאנו היינו מלאים היסוסים על צדדי המגרעות שישנם בהקמת "חזית דתית". ההיסוסים הללו שאין כאן המקום לפורטם עוד גברו במשך השנתיים ומחצה של קיום החזית והשתתפותו בממשלה. אבל אחרי שכבר נוצר החזית הדתית, איום הוא הפירוד עד כדי, שדי בפחד ממנו כדי להכריע לצד ההופעה האחידה. בבחירות הראשונות הבענו עמדה זו במפורש, אלא שההופעה האחידה הזו נכשלה בגלל עמדתם הנוקשה של אנשים שמעמידם ענינים מפוקפקים מעל

לאינטרסיים צבוריים. אנו נאצלנו אז לעשות מעשה שלא כרוחנו, ואף היום קיימת אפרות מלאה להופעה אחידה באם לא יכשילוה הללו שהיו אחראים לכשלון הראשון.
