Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1026 — Tzedakah

To the great Rav, distinguished chassid* who has yiras Shamayim* and dedicates himself faithfully to communal needs, Rav Shlomo Zalman[1],

Greetings and blessings,

I received in its time your request for a blessing for Mr. ... He has surely taken his tefillin* with him[2], and you must have given him the message of my father-in-law, the Rebbe[3]. He must be told and told again that he must put on tefillin* every day, except, of course, on Shabbos and Yom Tov. If he cannot do so in the morning, he will wear them during the day, until sunset, at least for a few minutes, even if he must remove them immediately afterward.

You will also explain to him that this mitzvah* has the property of bringing long days and good years. Our Sages say that whoever puts on tefillin* lives long. It is therefore not only a religious practice, but also an act of protection. He must therefore adopt this mitzvah*, whatever may otherwise be the level of his religious commitment when he is at home.

You will surely find the words to explain all this to him. If necessary, you will translate the contents of this letter into English for him.

בעתו קבלתי הפ"נ בעד מר... ובטח לקח עמדו את התפילין שלו, וכן נתן לו את המעסעדזש מכ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, וצריך להזהירו כפול ומשולש שיניח תפילין בכל יום - כמובן מלבד ש"ק ויו"ט - ואם אי אפשר לו בבקר, אזי יניחם במשך היום עד הערב שמש, ובכל אופן יניחם אף לשעה קלה, אף שיהי' מוכרח לחולצם מיד, ולהסביר לו אשר מצוה זו סגולה מיוחדה היא לאריכות ימים ושנים וכמרז"ל כל המניח תפילין מאריך ימים ובמילא אין זה ענין של דת לבד אלא גם הגנה מן הסכנה, ועליו להזהר בזה מבלי התחשב עם מעמדו ומצבו בקיום התומ"צ בהיותו בביתו, ובטח ימצא האותיות המתאימות בשבילו, ואם זקוק לזה הנה יעתיק לו את הכתוב בזה בלשון אנגלית...
