Greetings and blessings,

I received in its time your letter relating to the health of your son. You are worried because a doctor has discouraged you by weakening your hope of seeing him completely recovered.

You doubtless know the maamarim* given by our holy masters, who comment on the interpretation given by the Sages of the verse: "He shall surely heal: this means that the doctor has been authorized to heal." Such is therefore his domain and his competence. He is solely charged with healing.

Moreover, a second doctor, in this case, does not adopt the opinion of the first, more pessimistic one. You must therefore in no way lose hope, in particular at the present time, when one discovers, every day, new treatments, new medical techniques.

I will go, at an auspicious moment, near the tziyun* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, and I will mention the name of your son, that he should be healed. I have good hope that with time, you will give me good news in this matter. But, in any event, do not weaken your bitachon* in the Almighty, chas v'shalom*. He heals the sick, and nothing is impossible for Him, whatever means must be employed. Without doubt, in strengthening your bitachon*, as well as that of your wife, you will improve the state of health of your son.

It would be good to commit yourself to additional Torah study in general, and of Chassidus* in particular, as well as to an additional contribution to tzedakah*, even if it concerns small sums. Nevertheless, this contribution, which will be fixed and regular, will be made for the merit of your son. I await your good news on all this.

Greeting your father-in-law, distinguished chassid* who has yiras Shamayim*, and addressing a specific blessing to your son,

שלום וברכה!

בעתו קבלתי את מכתבו בנוגע למצב בריאות בנו... שי' אשר דואג הוא לחוו"ד רופא אחד שהרפה את ידיו והחליש את תקותו לרפו"ש של בנו שי':

בטח ידוע לו מאמרם של כמה וכמה מנשיאנו רבוה"ק על מרז"ל ורפא ירפא, שניתן רשות לרופא לרפאות , שרק זהו הכח והסמכא שיש לרופא - לרפאות בענין של רפואה, ובפרט - שהרופא השני ג"כ אינו מסכים לחו"ד הפסמיסט אין לו איפוא כלל להחליש התקוה הטובה, ובפרטי פרטיות הוא בימינו אלה שבכל יום ויום מתחדשים תרופות חדשות ודרכים חדשים בעניני רפואה.

בעת רצון שהנני על ציון כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר הנני מזכיר את בנו שי' לרפואה, ותקותי חזקה אשר במשך הזמן יוכל לבשרני בשו"ט בזה, אבל מובן מעצמו שח"ו אין לו להחליש בטחונו בהשי"ת שהוא הוא הרופא חולים ואין מעצור לו להושיע ברב או במעט, ועל ידי תוספת כח בהבטחון, הן מצדו והן מצד זוגתו תחי ' , הנה בלי ספק, אשר זה ימהר ג"כ הטבת בריאות בנו שי'.

מהראוי אשר יקח על עצמו לימוד נוסף בתורה בכלל ובתורת החסידות בפרט, וכן נתינה לצדקה - אף אם גם סכומים קטנים, אבל - בקביעות ותכופות לזכות בנו שי' ואחכה לבשו"ט ממנו בהנ"ל.
