Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1002 — Lag BaOmer

Volume 4 · Letter 238

By the grace of Hashem,
Pesach Sheni 5711,
Brooklyn, New York,

To the Rav, distinguished chassid* who has yiras Shamayim*, Rav I.[1],

Enclosed you will find the kuntres*[2] edited on the occasion of Lag BaOmer*, which approaches. Without doubt, you will make it available to as many people as possible, in the manner that is best suited.

Various reasons[3] justify the simchah* and the celebration of Lag BaOmer*. But we must hold to the words appearing in the writings of the Arizal* and quoted by Chassidus*[4], according to which this day is that of the histalkus* of Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai, the hilula* of Rabbi Shimon[5].

Indeed, "he reached, at that moment, the beginning and the summit of all the levels. It is for this that he taught[6] then to his disciples[7]. A reflection of the light of Moshiach* shone then in him."

As is known, all this is revealed anew each year, when the same situation presents itself.

In our generations, whose moral stature seems open to question, it is permitted and even necessary to reveal the inner teaching of the Torah, previously reserved for Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai and his disciples[8]. And it is precisely "by this study that we shall leave galus* with mercy."

Fortunate is the man who, on this auspicious day, that of the revelation of the inner part of the Torah, will strengthen himself and reinforce his study of this teaching.

He will do it for himself, attaching himself to his friends. To the full extent of his means, he will likewise influence his fellow to do the same.

In the light of this study[9], we shall receive life also through that of the revealed part of the Torah, and we shall perceive Hashem in all our ways. We shall know Him and we shall be conscious of what He expects of us, in everything concerning tefillah*, the study of Torah, the observance of mitzvos*, and daily conduct, in every detail of our actions.

With my blessing, and greeting your entire kehilla*,

M. Schneerson,

Notes
[1] This "collective-personal" letter was sent to several persons. See letter no. 481 on this subject.
[2] See letter no. 996 on this subject.
[3] The Rebbe notes, in a footnote: "See Mishnas Chassidim, on tractates Iyar and Sivan; the Pri Chadash on Orach Chaim ch. 493; the Maros Ayin of the Chida, in the collection section; the responsa Shem Aryeh, Orach Chaim section, ch. 14; the Sdei Chemed, collection of laws, on Eretz Yisroel, ch. 6; and the Pe'as HaSadeh at the same reference."
[4] The Rebbe notes, in a footnote: "See the Pri Etz Chaim, gate of the count of the Omer, ch. 7; the chassidic maamar* of the Alter Rebbe*, cited in the responsa Divrei Nechemia, Orach Chaim section, ch. 34, par. 7; the Siddur, gate of Lag BaOmer*. At this same reference, Rabbi Nechemia of Dubrovna says: 'The hilula of Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai, on Lag BaOmer, has spread throughout the world for several generations.'"
[5] The Rebbe notes, in a footnote: "See the Zohar*, vol. 3, p. 296b, and also vol. 1, p. 218a. It has been objected that one fasted on the date of the histalkus of tzaddikim*. But Lag BaOmer is, in this respect, particular, since Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai himself asked to rejoice on this date, according to this same reference in the Pri Etz Chaim. Rabbi Yaakov Weil, cited by the Sifsei Kohen Yoreh Deah ch. 344, par. 9, rules that in such a case one must conform to his opinion. This point will not be developed here."
[6] The Rebbe notes, in a footnote: "See the Siddur, gate of Lag BaOmer, at the end of the maamar entitled 'Atah Hitzavta' and at the conclusion of this gate."
[7] The text says: "the friends."
[8] The Rebbe notes, in a footnote: "See Iggeres HaKodesh*, ch. 26; the introduction of Rabbi Chaim Vital to Shaar HaHakdamos; the Shomer Emunim, first discussion, par. 29; the Kuntres Etz Chaim; the Kuntres Toras HaChassidus, ch. 10."
[9] The Rebbe notes, in a footnote: "According to the letter of the Rebbe Rashab*, printed as an addendum to the Kuntres Etz Chaim, page 94."
