Igrot Kodesh · Letter 1001 — Shidduchim

Greetings and blessings[1],

I reply to your letter of 13 Nissan, which I received with some delay and by which you inform me that several shidduchim* have been proposed to you and that you have difficulty making a decision, not being fully satisfied. You also speak of the present proposal, for which the major points[2] have already been outlined.

When I went near the tziyun* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, I mentioned your name, that you may be blessed in all your needs. He will no doubt invoke Heavenly mercy for you, and very soon you will be able to settle yourself[3] as is fitting.

As for your doubts, take as a reference the construction of a material house. It is, of course, decorated on the outside, but it matters above all to give it solid foundations, with robust materials, in conformity with the needs of the persons who will reside there and not for mere aesthetics, to which passersby will be sensitive.

How much more so must it be thus when it is a question of building a Jewish home. It must have a solid foundation, which will be Torah pervaded with yiras Shamayim*. Our Torah is qualified as "Torah of life," including in the most literal sense, since it is the guide of daily existence. The opinion of passersby on the external aesthetic is only accessory in relation to the essential aspect that has just been defined, even if human nature wants one to be satisfied with one's lot, or not, according to these external reactions.

You come from a chassidic family and you have surely been educated in this spirit. It is therefore unnecessary to say more and to justify these affirmations, of which you are no doubt fully conscious. By reflecting on it, you will be able to explain to yourself your position and your opinion on the shidduchim* proposed to you.

Hashem will lead you on the straight path, in order to build a Jewish home based on the Torah and the mitzvos*, such as they are explained and illuminated by Chassidus*.

I hope you will give me good news about yourself.

ברכה ושלום!

במענה על מכתבה מי"ג ניסן, שנתקבל באיחור זמן קצת, ובה היא מודיעה אשר הציעו לה כמה ענינים בשידוכים ואינה יכולה להחליט בעצמה מחוסר שביעת רצון כדבעי, וכן בנוגע להצעה עתה שכבר עשו בזה ראשי פרקים.

הנה כשהייתי על ציון כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע הזכרתי' לברכה בהמצטרך לה, ובטח יעורר רחמים שתתברך בהסתדרות המתאימה בקרוב ממש.

בנוגע לספקותי', בטח תשים אל לבה בנין בית גשמי איך הוא, אשר אף שמייפים אותו גם בחיצוניותו, אבל העיקר הוא שיהי' בנוי על יסוד חזק ומחמרים חזקים שיתאים לצרכי האנשים שצריכים לדור בו, ולא למראה עיני העוברים ברחוב.

ועל אחת כמה וכמה שכן צריך להיות בבנין בית בישראל, שהעיקר הוא שיהי' בנוי על יסוד חזק הוא התורה ביראת שמים, אשר תורתנו נקראת תורת חיים, תורת חיים גם כפשוטו שהיא מורה דרך בחיים היום יומיים. וחוות דעת ה"עוברים ברחוב" על דבר ה"יופי" החיצוני, הנה אף שמטבע בני אדם שזה מודד את השמח בחלקו או ח"ו להיפך, אבל בכ"ז אין זה אלא טפל לגבי חלק העקרי הנ"ל.

בהיותה בת משפחת חסידים, אשר בטח נתחנכה ג"כ ברוח זה, בודאי אך למותר להאריך ולהטעים את הדברים האלה, אשר בטח ידועים הם לה מכבר. וההתבוננות בהם בודאי תבהיר גם לעצמה את עמדתה וחוות דעתה על הנכבדות המדובר עמה, והשי"ת ינחנה בדרך הישר לבנות בית בישראל על יסודי התורה והמצוה כפי שנתבארו והוארו בתורת החסידות.
